I Wanna Destroy You
I’ve been working at a cafe downtown this afternoon, listening to one of the few mixes that lives on my laptop. It’s an imagining of Margot Tenenbaum’s favorite music, and I must say she’s got great taste for someone who’s just pretend.
And when I say I’m listening to the mix, what I mean is that I’ve gotten stuck on an endless loop of The Soft Boys doing “I Wanna Destroy You.” I finally gave up and just put the thing on repeat: my capacity for hearing the same song over and over is vast, and this one’s hitting all the resonant points in my skull today. It’s a wish, a threat, a battle cry.
I can’t find a real video of The Soft Boys singing it, although you can watch some jackhole dancing to it here (honestly, the moves in my head are way more ninja). Better yet, just download the mix, if it’s still available.
Or if you like a harder edge and a heavier rasp than Robyn Hitchcock delivers, here are the Circle Jerks rocking all kindsa drag. Debbie Gibson’s doing backup (or so they say), but she wisely steered clear of this video shoot:
When they say they wanna destroy you, they really mean it.

I often dream of trains, and trams of old London, along with the Jazz Butcher’s “still in the kitchen” have a particular poignance for me. They are three songs which my wife and I still like from the eighties. There are artist catalogs which I still listen to, Like Cocteau twins and XTC.
I nearly forgot Uncorrected Personality Traits.

Glad you’re enjoying the mix!

I love all the XTC on your site, Coozledad. It’s weird, I just joined Facebook after vowing up-and-down to avoid it, and having all sorts of suddenly-remembered names float past doesn’t just bring up memories of those people, it also carries a soundtrack that’s particular to them or the time when you knew them. So I’ve been living in the 80s for a couple of days now.

Thanks for the music, Paige, and for the fragrant hit of Margot.
